Biometric Gun Safes to Consider

gunNot too long ago I wrote that my husband and I have been thinking about purchasing a biometric gun safe. Some of you were wondering what information I had found so I decided to put a little something together. There are quite a few options out there, and what you specifically need will definitely play a role in which you choose.

  • Gunvault – This one has tamper indicators, back up security codes, and lots of other bells and whistles.
  • BioBox – This is a cool option for people who don’t need a ton of room. It is portable and is really designed for smaller items but I think it would work for one small handgun.
  • BioVault – This bad boy is made by the same company as the BioBox but is much bigger. I like the looks of this one a lot. It stores up to 50 fingerprints which is also nice (I’m thinking all ten of mine and my husband’s just to be on the safe side)

These are some that I’ve been more impressed with but in the interest of saving you some research time I will tell you that there are plenty of people out there who hate/love all of these. There are some serious horror stories but also some diehard fans. Before making one of these big purchases I recommend calling the manufacturer for two reasons. First, get some extra information. Second, find out how easy and efficient their customer service team is.

Do you have another biometric gun safe I should look at?

Biometric Gun Safe

June 18th, 2009 1 Comments

berettaI live in a very rural area in the south. I’m just going to get that out there so everyone feels free to make assumptions about my lifestyle, education, and intelligence. The thing is, I do like guns. I actually own several and when I had my son I started thinking about gun safety. My husband and I considered a traditional gun safe, but decided that those are too easy to open. Well easy if you are determined.

That’s when we started looking into biometric gun safes. Most of them have the same kind of fire rating and can even be bolted to the floor like the bigger safes. The biggest difference is they are smaller (usually) and can be more expensive because of the technology involved. The ones we are considering are large enough for a couple of handguns as well as documents or jewelry.

The only way to open them is with a fingerprint scan. They are electric (have to run it somehow, right?) but have an internal battery backup. I think this is perfect because there is no way the baby (and he’ll always be my baby) could get into it. We haven’t completely decided if this is what we want, but my son is rapidly approaching the age where a decision has to be made.

Anyone want to give a recommendation or two?
